Relationships, Passion & Trust

Two very informative presentations filled our morning. The first by Dayssi Kanavos from Flag Luxury focusing on her experiences in real estate development. She credits research and perseverance as two major factors in her success at breaking into a field dominated by male-owned family businesses. Making connections and fostering relationships are integral in establishing oneself in any profession, but maintaining these relationships and treating customers with the same level of interest keep you on top. She also noted that the key to Flag Luxury’s innovative capabilities lies in the fact that it is a small organization that allows its personnel the freedom necessary to get the job done right.

John Barlow of Barlow-Hartman focused on his life in the sphere of public relations, much of which fell back on talent and timing. He chose his profession because he wanted to make a difference and give back to the theatre which has given him so much pleasure throughout his life. He, too, emphasized the importance of relationships in business as well as your reputation and credibility. The promotion of a show or anything that is not as good as past projects should not erode your credibility as a professional. You must temper your enthusiasm and do your best to promote the client while maintaining your ethical code. A key concept that Barlow brought up that is important to keep in mind in all career paths is that once someone makes a decision, all involved must be unified and get behind that idea as if it were their own.

To sum up, key concepts for the day were relationships, passion, and trust. All of this was followed by a nice lunch and some awkward photography, I always feel strange on the other side of the lens.
